Keep your RV going straight—even in wind, ruts, or passing semis.
If your motorhome tends to wander on the highway or you're constantly fighting the steering wheel, a steering stabilizer like the Safe-T-Plus can make a big difference. It helps keep your vehicle centered, absorbs side forces, and reduces driver fatigue—especially on long trips or uneven roads.
Installing one yourself is easier than you might think. Here’s a step-by-step guide.
What You’ll Need
-
Floor jack and jack stands (if needed)
-
Socket wrench set (typically 9/16", 3/4", or metric equivalents)
-
Torque wrench
-
Tape measure or straightedge
-
Thread locker (optional)
-
The Safe-T-Plus unit and mounting hardware (specific to your chassis)
Step 1: Identify Your Chassis
Before starting, confirm what chassis your RV is built on—Ford F53, Freightliner, Workhorse, etc. Each one uses a different Safe-T-Plus mounting kit. You’ll need the correct brackets for a proper install.
Step 2: Prep the Vehicle
Park on a flat surface and engage the parking brake. If needed for access, jack up the front end and place it securely on stands. Make sure the front wheels are pointed straight ahead.
Step 3: Mount the Brackets
Install the axle bracket first. It usually clamps around the tie rod or track bar using U-bolts and a backing plate. Make sure the bracket is centered and tightened evenly.
Next, install the frame bracket. This mounts to the crossmember or frame rail, depending on your kit. You may need to drill or use factory holes depending on the chassis and mounting location.
Step 4: Attach the Safe-T-Plus Unit
Bolt the Safe-T-Plus cylinder to both brackets, keeping it centered at its neutral (uncompressed) position. The piston should be halfway extended when the wheels are straight.
Double-check for clearance through full left and right steering travel. The unit should not bind or bottom out in either direction.
Step 5: Adjust for Centering
Test drive the RV. If it pulls slightly left or right, adjust the position of the axle bracket—not the frame bracket. Move it in small increments (1/8” or so) in the direction of the pull until the vehicle tracks straight.
Step 6: Torque Everything
Tighten all bracket bolts to the specified torque values listed in your Safe-T-Plus instructions. Apply thread locker to prevent loosening over time.
Final Tip
This upgrade doesn’t just improve steering feel—it makes long drives less stressful and adds a layer of control if you ever blow a front tire. It’s a must-have for many Class A motorhome owners.
